Nicolas Slonimsky at Mills College (1973)Description
Nicolas Slonimsky giving a performance at Mills College in Oakland CA, 1973. The Russian-American music lexicographer, conductor, composer, raconteur extraordinaire, and self-described child prodigy, was born in St. Petersburg in 1894. In 1923 he came to the United States, eventually becoming very involved in the avant-garde musical scene, both by playing adventurous pieces of his own on the piano, as well as conducting the world premieres of Edgar Varèse's pioneering work for percussion “Ionisation”, works by Charles Ives and others. Nicolas Slonimsky died on December 25, 1995 at the grand old age of 101.Genres & Subjects
