Lou Harrison (left) and his partner William Colvig, at their home in Aptos, California, (ca. 1998). Shot in their dining room with posters by Mark Bullwinkle hanging in background. Lou Harrison’s use of gamelan instruments and interest in word music helped bring an appreciation of Pacific and Asian music to the United States. William Colvig collaborated with Harrison for many years, building original and gamelan-inspired instruments.
