John Schneider, Ben Johnston, Catherine Lamb, & Dobromiła Jaskot (l to r) having a discussion during their retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, prior to the start of OM 14, in March, 2009.John Schneider is perhaps best known for his work with alternate tuning systems and frequently performs on an assortment of well-tempered, re-fretted, and adapted guitars. A composer, author, and educator, as well as an accomplished guitarist, Schneider was at this time a professor at Pierce College in Los Angeles and music director of the Just Strings ensemble which specializes in works with alternate tunings.
American composer Benjamin Burwell Johnston was born March 15, 1926 in Macon, GA. Living briefly in Berkeley, CA, in 1950, he was associated with Harry Partch and studied at the University of California and Mills College. From 1951 to 1983 he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Catherine Lamb is a graduate of CalArts, where she studied with James Tenney, Michael Pisaro, and Stephen “Lucky” Mosko.
Dobromiła Jaskot is a Polish composer and pianist, whose work often incorporates multi-media art, and interactive elements. Her works have been widely played in Europe and she has also taught at the Electoacoustic Studio at the Music Academy in Bydogoszcz.
