Description
Michael Harrison standing in front of a note filled white board with his head turned back towards the room where a laughing Ben Johnston is seated facing him. Taken during a presentation by Harrison as part of the composer’s retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, prior to the start of OM 14 in March of 2009. Harrison is a well known pianist with a long standing interest in different tuning systems who has designed his own “harmonic piano,” on which he can easily alternate between two different tunings using the same conventional keyboard. American composer Benjamin Burwell Johnston was born March 15, 1926 in Macon, GA. Living briefly in Berkeley, CA, in 1950, he was associated with Harry Partch and studied at the University of California and Mills College. From 1951 to 1983 he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
