Description
Chinary Ung, Ben Johnston, & John Schneider (l to r), sharing a meal during their retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, prior to the start of OM 14 in March of 2009. Ung is making a comment as Johnston listens while looking down at his plate and Schneider looks over his shoulder towards Ung. Born in Cambodia in 1942, Ung moved to the United States in 1964 where he studied clarinet and composition music at Columbia University. His many works are often marked by the incorporation of traditional Cambodian elements combined with more typical Western orchestral instrumentation. American composer Benjamin Burwell Johnston was born March 15, 1926 in Macon, GA. Living briefly in Berkeley, CA, in 1950, he was associated with Harry Partch and studied at the University of California and Mills College. From 1951 to 1983 he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. John Schneider is perhaps best known for his work with alternate tuning systems and frequently performs on an assortment of well-tempered, re-fretted, and adapted guitars. A composer, author, and educator, as well as an accomplished guitarist, Schneider was at this time a professor at Pierce College in Los Angeles and music director of the Just Strings ensemble which specializes in works with alternate tunings.
