John Schneider demonstrates the Harmonic Canon for his fellow OM 14 composers during their retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside CA, prior to the start of OM 14 in March 2009. The Harmonic Canon, invented by Harry Partch,is a sort of 44-string, adjustable bridged, table zither, that can be used for performing a variety of microtonal music. John Schneider is perhaps best known for his work with alternate tuning systems and frequently performs on an assortment of well-tempered, re-fretted, and adapted guitars. A composer, author, and educator, as well as an accomplished guitarist, Schneider was at this time a professor at Pierce College in Los Angeles and music director of the Just Strings ensemble which specializes in works with alternate tunings.
