Description
Charles Amirkhanian interviews the Russian-French conductor Vladimir Golschmann about his friendship with George Antheil and his role as a conductor of a number of Antheil’s pieces in the late 1920s in Europe. Golschmann relates how he met Antheil when the radical avant-garde American composer showed up on his doorstep during the 1920s requesting the then young conductor’s assistance in setting up a special concert of his music. The two men soon struck up an enduring friendship and fruitful collaboration, which Golschmann describes in great detail, including an initial introductory dinner at an expensive Paris restaurant, for which Antheil had to borrow money from Golschmann in order to pay the bill at the end of the evening. In addition, Golschmann also describes the difficulties in getting new music recorded during the first half of the 20th century.
