Description
From a program recorded on December 8, 1980, composer Peter Gena, who was then on the faculty of Fresno State University in California, talks with Charles Amirkhanian about some of his recent compositions and how they might differ from some of his earlier works. The program begins with Gena discussing his work “Beethoven in SoHo,” as well as his views on what he considers the return of tonality in his and other’s contemporary compositions. Gena and Amirkhanian contrast those tonal work by composers who experimented with more avant-garde styles of composition during the 1960s and 70s with those tamer works by more traditional composers who never went through a period of radical experimentation. Gena suggests that in much the same way that one can differentiate long haired hippies who have now cut there hair short from those who maintained their buzz cuts throughout the past couple of turbulent decades, so can one discern a difference between works that represent a return to tonality from those that never left it. Gena also briefly discusses his studies with Lejaren Hiller and Morton Feldman, and how they influenced his career.
