Description
Here are two recordings of George Antheil’s “Sonata” for flute and piano. The performers are Jane Lenoir, flute and Madeline Bruser, piano. The recording was made on October 18, 1971, at the Berkeley Piano Club in Berkeley, California. The first performance was made during a public concert of the Pacifica Chamber Players. where the “Sonata” was played as an encore of the regularly announced program. The second performance was taped after the audience had exited the hall.George Antheil was a pianist and composer who lived from July 8, 1900 to February 12, 1959. This “Sonata” dates from his late period, well removed from the 1920’s when this self-proclaimed “bad boy of music” was a proponent of a new, experimental, mechanistic music. During those early years in his career Antheil’s radically daring piano concerts were often the talk of Paris where he lived. He later returned to the United States where he focused less on avant-garde performances and more on composing, including working on a series of successful film scores. His music from 1928 on affirmed the influence of Russian composers such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich, as is evident in this “Sonata” which was composed in 1951.
