Fourth concert of the 9th Other Minds Festival. March 8, 2003. Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, San Francisco, CA. Artist Forum, 7:00pm, and Concert, 8:00pm.Pre-concert artist forum with Stephen Hill, Stephen Scott, and Stephan Micus, moderated by Charles Amirkhanian. After Amirkhanian introduces the "three Steves", Stephan Micus talks about his musical inspirations, upbringing in Germany, his current whereabouts, and his impression of the festival's residency several days prior. Stephen Hill, producer of the long running radio program Hearts of Space, shares his first encounter with Micus and his music. Hill goes on to discuss contemplative music and how he came to focus on this type of music for his radio program. Micus and Hill then comment on "new age" music and how there is a huge range of quality within the genre.
After Micus takes leave to tend to one of his instruments, Stephen Scott discusses his piece being performed that night, "Paisajes Audibles" for soprano and bowed piano ensemble. He cites some of the sources of texts used for the piece and included in the concert's program guide. The piece was inspired by and premiered in the Canary Islands, and Scott describes the lava tube that held the concert hall where it was performed. Scott then describes how a bowed piano is played and the various techniques used by the ensemble.
Stephen Hill adds his observation about the similarities of Scott and Micus' approach to music making.
Stephen Scott concludes by talking about the multiple cameras being used to project the ensembles's playing inside the piano, and his daughter who did the live video mix.
Amirkhanian makes a few announcements about the score auction and supporters of the festival. The remaining footage includes a clip of Pamela Wunderlich as et pied à terre and Bowling for Frida, and Stephan Micus talking to various people by the score exhibit. The wandering camera follows a few others and catches Charles Amirkhanian who is talking to Larry Reed of the Shadow Light Puppet Theater.
