Description
In an interview recorded on October 8, 1969, and broadcast the next day, Charles Amirkhanian talks to conductor Gerhard Samuel about the scheduled 1970-71 season of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. Samuel was one of the most adventurous concert programmers in America at that time, and the scheduled seasons’ offerings were to include Terry Riley’s “In C”, as well as works by Larry Austin, David Sheinfeld, Luciano Berio, Edward Applebaum (Oakland Symphony’s composer-in-residence), and Henry Brant. Quite an eclectic selection during a year where many large symphony programs were focusing on the bicentennial of Beethoven’s birth by presenting a more traditional Romantic repertoire. Samuel also heaps praise upon the work of the Oakland Youth Symphony and the manner in which it has been able to support local school music programs without supplanting them. Five days after this interview Samuel announced that he would leave his post as conductor at the end of the 1970-71 season. One can only imagine the dismay among San Francisco Bay Area aficionados of contemporary music upon hearing that news.Genres
