Description
The 4th Annual New Sounds San Jose Festival included a concert featuring the works of Robert Erickson (available on radiOM.org). That evening of extraordinary music also included this brief panel discussion with Charles Shere Loren Rush, Bill Triest, and Bertram Turetzky, during which the four friends of Erickson discuss the man, his health, and his unwavering devotion to music. Although Erickson was unable to attend the concert due to continuing health problems, the four men strive to give the audience a sense of his generous spirit and curious intellect. Born in 1917, Erickson studied with Ernst Krenek, and was one of the first American composers to work with tape music. He served as a mentor for such composers as Morton Subotnick, Pauline Oliveros, and Terry Riley while holding a variety of teaching positions at U. C. Berkeley, U. C. San Diego, the San Francisco Conservatory, and other institutions. Erickson died in 1997 after a long illness.
