Description
From 1983, Charles Amirkhanian interviews the Italian composer Guido Baggiani and Robert Hughes, director of the Arch Ensemble of Berkeley, which had just presented Baggiani’s “Concert for Cal” during a concert in honor of Calvin Simmons, to whom the piece was dedicated. Born in 1932, Baggiani received his musical education at the Conservatorio di S Cecilia where he studied with Boris Porena. in the mid-1960s he moved to Germany where he was a student of Karlheinz, Stockhausen, whom he credits as one of his major influences as a composer. Returning to Rome, Baggiani collaborated with Walter Branchi in forming first the Gruppo Team Roma in 1972, and then Musica Verticale in 1977. Both ensembles were primarily devoted to electro-acoustic music. Baggiani has also taught at conservatories in both Pesaro, Perugia, and later in his life, Rome. Despite his interest in electro-acoustic music, Baggiani voices dismay in this interview at the state of electronic music studios at his educational institutions and in Italy in general.
