Description
In a photograph most likely taken in the Green Room of the San Francisco Jewish Community Center where the 12th Other Minds Music Festival was held, Xu Fengxia is seen sitting with her guzheng, or Chinese zither, in front of a mirror. Seated to her left, but best seen in the reflection on the right, is Gunda Gottschalk, holding her violin. The two women were part of the Joëlle Leandre Trio, who performed during the second concert of OM 12 on December 9, 2006. Xu Fengxia was born in Shanghai in 1963 and is an accomplished soloist on the guzheng and other similar Asian stringed instruments. Gunda Gottschalk is an internationally renowned, German-based violinist, who has performed at countless concerts and festivals, often alongside a veritable who’s who of avant-garde composers and improvisers.
