George Lewis playing the trombone during his visit to the San Francisco Bay Area as part of the 3rd Other Minds Music Festival in November 1996. Born in Chicago in 1952, Lewis is a trombonist and composer specializing in free jazz and experimental electronic music. Lewis has a degree in philosophy from Yale University, and has taught at the University of California in San Diego and Columbia, he has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians since 1971, and received a MacArthur Fellowship or “Genius Award” in 2002. He is married to the koto player and composer Miya Masaoka, who joined him as a featured composer at OM 3 in 1996.
