Description
Jennifer Culp, David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt, of the Kronos Quartet, and Ellen Fullman (l to r), during either a rehearsal or actual performance of Fullman’s “Stratified Bands: Last Kind Word,” which was premiered at the 8th Other Minds Music Festival, in San Francisco, in March of 2002. Ellen Fullman’s career in music was launched at age one, when Elvis Presley kissed her hand. She went on to earn a BFA in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute, leading her to create her "Metal Skirt Sound Sculpture," which she wore to perform at the 1980 New Music America. Soon after, Fullman accidentally discovered the sound of longitudinally vibrating long strings. Since then, she has been developing the Long String Instrument (LSI), and its abundant possibilities. The Kronos Quartet is America’s foremost string quartet specializing in contemporary music. They have collaborated with countless contemporary and avant-garde composers, choreographers, theatrical directors, and visual artists, for over 30 years. They have commissioned more than 600 new compositions, often by young and less well established composers.
