With its potent mix of compositional creativity and stellar musicianship, ROVA explores the synthesis of compositions and collective improvisation in ways that challenge, excite and inspire. Positioning itself in a dynamic musical nexus, ROVA has become an important leader in the music movement that has its roots in post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock, and 20th century new music as well as drawing inspiration from traditional and popular styles of Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. Matthais Bossi, a graduate of the New England Conservatory, is a drummer for the avant-garde “rock” group Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, along with his wife, violinist and composer Carla Kihlstedt. In addition to an active touring and recording schedule Bossi has also pursued an alternative career as an actor and has appeared with a variety of theatrical companies, including the Oakland Metro Opera, Pickle Family Circus, and Nanos Operetta, among others.
Joan Mankin is a West Coast based actress who has performed with countless theatrical groups and circuses, including the American Conservatory Theater, California Shakespeare Theater, San Francisco Mimi Troupe, and the Pickle Family Circus, to mention just a very few. Ms. Mankin has also directed productions for the San Francisco New Vaudeville Festival, and taught drama at a number of well respected universities and conservatories.
