Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith & Åke Parmerud (l to r), during a panel discussion right before the first concert of the 13th Other Minds Festival, at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco, on March 6, 2008.Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith is a composer and leading free-jazz musician. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and co-founder of the Creative Construction Company with Leroy Jenkins and Anthony Braxton, Smith is one of jazz music’s most versatile performers. Born in Mississippi in 1941, much of Smith’s music has been influenced by his early exposure to Delta Blues and traditional improvised music of the Southern United States. Smith is the developer of his own system of notation, called Ankhrasmation, and has taught at a number of well respected universities, including Bard College in New York.
Swedish composer Åke Parmerud was born in 1953, and has been composing since his early twenties. Educated at the Gothenburg Music Conservatory, Parmerud has written for multi-media, video, film, dance, and the theater, as well as more typical instrumental ensembles. However he is perhaps best known for his electro-acoustic compositions which have won numerous festival prizes and been recorded for a variety of labels. A member of the Royal Academy of Music since 1998, Parmerud is also a teacher of composition and computer music.
