Description
A recording of the second half of a concert for organ works performed by Edwin Flath. The concert was held on Sunday, July 25, 1971 at the University of California Berkeley's Hertz Hall. Flath was a renowned concert organist and founder of the California Bach Society. He died in 1987.

The pieces heard here were performed after intermission and begin with Olivier Messiaen's "L'Ascension", followed by a toccata and several chorale preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach.

A gold medal winner while a student of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Edwin Flath later studied with numerous teachers at the Organ Institute in Massachusetts, including E. Power Briggs, Finn Videro and Gustav Leonhardt. At Syracuse University, where he received his degrees, he studied organ with Arthur Poister and piano with Ernst Bacon. Also known for his conducting of opera, Mr. Flath recently conducted "Macbeth" and "Fidelio" in Palo Alto, and this season a production of Handel's "Athalia". He is Director of Music and Organist at All Souls Church, Berkeley, and Founder and Director of Berkeley and Palo Alto Bach Choirs, whose aim is to survey Bach choral literature.
