A selection of excerpts from early 20th century chamber music mostly dubbed from rare or out of print 78 rpm records, several of which were released by Henry Cowell’s New Music Quarterly, and probably taken from Lou Harrison’s own private collection. This program includes movements from Carlos Chavez’s “Caballos de Vapor” or “Horsepower” suite for orchestra and his “Sonatina” for violin and piano, the later being performed by Alexander Lipsky and his wife Esther. Also heard here is Julián Caprilo’s “Preludio a Cristobal Colon,” a microtonal piece scored for soprano and instrumental ensemble. The program then concludes with performances by the Barrère Woodwind Ensemble of compositions by two American composers, Wallingford Riegger and Walter Piston. Although taken from slightly scratchy old 78s the quality of both the compositions and musicianship make this worthwhile and thoroughly enjoyable listening
