Description
The Suite is dedicated to Antheil's son, Peter Richard who was born in 1937. This work, then, was composed between 1937 and 1942. The first movement humorously satirizes practice hours of the young pupil, replete with "wrong" harmonies which are characteristic of Antheil's grown up music as well. The second is an homage to Antheil's lifelong friend, Ernest Hemingway. The third is imitative of solo piano works of Stravinsky, who was for a short time a friend of the composer, and later gave Antheil the cold shoulder, This was in Europe in the 20's. The two men later lived in Los Angeles at the same time, but were never really reconciled.Genres
