Eugene Weigel: Prairie SymphonyBernard Goodman, conductor
University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra
dubbed from the U. of Ill. Custom Recording Series CRA 2 (mono LP)
Prairie Symphony is in one movement, opening with a slow introduction which gives way to the main body of the work in an allegro tempo. Mr. Weigel writes concerning this work: “I should like to say something to my fellow human beings who listen to this recording. This work is so named simply because it is the work of a man who lives on the prairie. The only outward symbol used is the song of the Song Sparrow who, a long time ago, sang outside my window. As a craftsman I react with horror to the dictum of the mind. At the very least this is the work of a man who stood on his two feet squarely where he was put and tried to record what he saw, felt, and heard.”
Eugene Weigel (1910- ) was a student of Hindmith at Yale. Until 1948 he was a violist in the Walden Quartet. He teaches on the U. Illinois faculty.
