Description
This was the second panel discussion in the afternoon of July 13, 1991 during the 1991 Composer-to-Composer Festival.

A conversation with Zakir Hussain and Louis Andriessen, moderated by Charles Amirkhanian, about coming from musical families. Andriessen and Hussain ask each other questions and talk about experiences like learning music from their fathers who were both established and well known composers and musicians in their country; Hendrik Andriessen (Netherlands) and Allah Rakha (India). How does a son study with a father in the European environment compared to Indian culture ? Would they even be musicians if their parents weren't musicians? The issue of respect for artists and the arts (compared to the U.S.A) is also discussed. The topic of "music as numbers" gets started with discussing Indian scales and ragas, then moving to equivalents in Western music. Hussain asks Andriessen if he ever went through a "personal dilemma" about breaking away from classical traditions. The discussion concludes with Andriessen recounting a story about how his father refused to join the new cultural chamber created by the Germans who were occupying the Netherlands during WWII.
