The 23rd Other Minds Festival, focused on the art of Sound Poetry, took place in San Francisco at the ODC/Dance Theatre over the course of six days (April 9-14, 2018); OM’s longest festival to date which included five concerts and a day of lectures and workshops.

On April 10, 2018, two workshops were offered for those wanting to learn about sound poetry and even have a go at performing themselves. At 7:00pm Dutch artist Jaap Blonk led a workshop for vocalists and performers, or anyone who was interested in exploring the inner depths and outer reaches of voice, text, music, and sound in an exploratory improvisational framework. Participants worked playfully, using games and improvisational structures.

The first half of the workshop consisted of Blonk discussing his development as a vocal artist and shared examples of influential figures and poems that served as inspirational starting points. The ever energetic Blonk also presented recorded as well as live performed excerpts of his works, and demonstrated his compositional use of the international phonetic alphabet among other things.

Whether or not listeners are familiar with Jaap Blonk, they will enjoy the anecdotes and historical perspective offered in the talk, as well as the ability to listen in when the audience becomes a performing ensemble. Participants sound out a variety of “instant compositions” from the exercises led by Blonk and other participants who get to take reigns as conductors.
