Description
This first panel discussion on July 8, 1991 of the Composer to Composer Festival held in Telluride, Colorado.

The participating composers included: John Lifton, Paul Dresher, Zakir Hussain, Alan Hovhaness, Tom Zé, G.S. Sachdev, Pamela Z, Alicia Terzian, Janice Giteck, Eleanor Alberga, Louis Andriessen, Fred Ho, and Charles Amirkhanian.

Opening remarks by Charles Amirkhanian and Pamela Zoline include topics of past Composer to Composer festivals. The composers then interview and introduce each other.

After the introductions, the composers discuss possible topics for public panels.

Topics suggested include multiculturalism in music, problems with arts funding in the United States, the role of the composer in social change, the role of music and its effect on people, and issues with visibility in composition depending on nationality.

The composers then discuss what the definition of popular culture is and whether it is appropriate to disparage the “mainstream” just because one lives outside of it. They also discuss what success looks like in the modern world as a composer.

Louis Andriessen proposes that the composers discuss spiritualism in music from the perspective of the composer, rather than the listener.
