Description
A recording of the second session of private composer presentations during the 1988 Composer to Composer festival in Telluride, Colorado. August 16, 1988 at 5:00pm.

Charles Amirkhanian calls attention to the composers and introduces Kyle Gann. Gann talks about his education and background, the influence of Native American music on his work, as well as his love for repeating cycles. He plays some excerpts from “I’itoi variations” (1985) for two computerized pianos. [Note: Distortion during musical examples.]

The composers then discuss the computerized piano parts and the difference between a live person performing and computers performing music. Gann then explains the differences between native tribes musics, tribal politics, and the white washing of many native tribes and their art.

Gann also plays “Baptism” (1983) for two flutes, synthesizer, and percussion based on an Apache hymn. The group finishes the discussion then Charles Amirkhanian continues by giving the schedule for the rest of the week.
