Description
From a program first broadcast on January 24, 1973, Charles Amirkhanian interviews composer Allen Strange. Born in Calexico California in 1943, Strange studied composition with Robert Erickson, Harry Partch and Pauline Oliveros, and later taught at San Jose State University. Perhaps best known as a composer of electronic music, Strange also created a number of intermedia pieces, illustrating his compositions with slides film, and video, as well as collaborating on a quite a few theatrical works. Cofounder of two electronic music ensembles, BIOME and the Electronic Weasel Ensemble, Strange was also the author of several books, including “Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls“. In this interview Strange talks about several of his pieces, including one that uses the vocabulary of electronic sounds but is performed by a high school wind ensemble. Allen Strange retired from teaching in 2002 and died Seattle on February 20, 2008.
