Description
From a transcription tape obtained from the Dutch radio Station VPRO in 1973, pianist Veronica Jochum performs the music of the American gay composer, Charles Tomlinson Griffes. In what may be a rendition of Griffes “Three Preludes” as well as a selection of other short piano works, Jochum’s performance illustrates how an individual’s particular style and interpretation of a composition can highlight special aspects of a composer’s work. Griffes was born in 1884 and after an initial period of study in America, he went to Berlin for a number of years during which he was introduced to the music of the French Impressionists and Scriabin, which had a lasting influence on his compositions. He returned to America in 1907 and continued composing for the piano and chamber ensembles until his untimely death from influenza in 1920.
