Description
From a concert recorded on July 23, 1965 at the University of California in Berkeley’s Hertz Hall, the Francesco Trio performs Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Archduke Trio” for piano, violin, and cello. The Francesco Trio, comprised of David Abel on violin, Bonnie Hampton, cello, and Nathan Rubin, piano, was a mainstay in the Bay Area classical music scene for a number of decades, and this performance clearly demonstrates why. The “Archduke Trio,” so named because of its dedication to the amateur pianist and composition student of Beethoven’s, Archduke Rudolph of Austria, was composed in 1810-11. An 1814 performance of the piece featuring Beethoven on piano proved to be the last appearance of Beethoven as a pianist.
