Description
A compilation of four experimental radio works, originally broadcast in November and December of 1976 as part of KPFK’s Close Radio, a weekly program which specialized in presenting conceptual and experimental art pieces by avant-garde artists. The first work is an excerpt from “TSNX/C24Va7ME: A Play by Dr. Hun,” an experimental theatrical work by Guy de Cointet which largely consists of a couple of actors reciting lines formed from license plate numbers, phone numbers, movie ratings, and other sounds and words, all seemingly arranged by some code known only to the author. This is followed by “CarMen: The Opera” a performance art piece created by the alternative design and conceptual art collective known as the Ant Farm. Performed outside the Sydney Opera House in Australia, “CarMen” is an opera in three acts in which almost all the sounds heard are created by automobiles. The third piece heard in this remarkable program is “CS Opera” by Nancy Buchanan, an artist who was also one of the main founders of Close Radio. Like the first work by Cointet, “CS Opera” is an experimental theatrical work incorporating a dialogue between a man and a woman in which every comment appears to be a non sequitur or randomly assigned sentence, leaving it up to the audience to provide the required connections and plot, which given the nature of the human mind, happens regardless of how nonsensical the conversation may seem. This fascinating hour of avant-garde radio programing concludes with a live broadcast of a participatory piece “Secret for the Public, Part 2,” conceived by Laurel Klick in which she asks listeners to call in and anonymously confess a personal secret.
