Description
From a program recorded on May 12, 1983, Charles Amirkhanian interviews pianist, educator, and composer Doris Hays, as well as playing a selection of her music. Doris, who later adopted the name of Sorrel in 1985, was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1941 and from an early age showed an interest in music. She was performing regularly for her church by the age of 12, and was an accompanist and soloist for the Chattanooga Boys Choir at 15. After studying in both the United States and Germany, Ms. Hays soon gained a reputation as a performer of contemporary classical music, winning the first prize at the Gaudeamus Competition for Interpreters of New Music in 1971. She is particularly well known for her performances featuring the piano works of Henry Cowell. Starting in the early 1970s Ms. Hays expanded her interests to composing and has written numerous chamber, orchestral, electro-acoustic, and tape works, as well as collaborating on several multi-media and film projects.
