Description
Virgil Thomson, photographed ca. 1973, outside home of Charles Amirkhanian and Carol Law, 1639 Curtis Street, Berkeley, CA. Photo by Carol Law. Born in 1896, Virgil Thomson studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris during the 1920s and was friends George Antheil, Henry Brant, Henry Cowell, and Gertrude Stein, with whom he collaborated on two operas. In 1949 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Music with his film score for “Louisiana Story.” In addition to his composing he was also a music critic for the New York Herald-Tribune from 1940 through 1954.

This photo was likely taken at the time Charles Amirkhanian interviewed Thomson about George Antheil and other 20th century composers.
