Description
On April 15, 1949, at 3 PM PST Lewis Hill uttered the first words heard over KPFA-FM. This program, hosted by Charles Amirkhanian (Music Director) and Roger Pritchard (General Manager), was recorded as KPFA celebrated the exact moment of the 25th anniversary of the world’s first listener-sponsored radio station. Included is a complete broadcast of a documentary, “Pacifica is 25,” produced by Larry Josephson, featuring interviews with many personalities dating from KPFA’s earliest years, including Joy Hill, widow of the station's founder Lewis Hill. Also included are reminiscences, evaluations, and perspectives of the people who made the station a voice for social, cultural, and artistic change. After this documentary, Vera Hopkins, a former KPFA volunteer, bookkeeper, and secretary of the Pacifica Foundation, is interviewed about the station’s public financing, labor relations, and investigations by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. This program then concludes with an interview with Scott Keech, the News Director of KPFA from 1964 to 1967, and his wife Kathryn Keech, who produced programs for children under the auspices of KPFA’s Department of Drama and Literature. The discussion includes such topics as KPFA’s coverage of the Vietnam War, racial issues, the Free Speech Movement, People’s Park, and other major stories covered by Keech during his tenure. The history of the station with its listener sponsorship and dedication to covering stories not picked up by the mainstream press is also discussed.
