Description

Elena Kats-Chernin plays the piano at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco during what was most likely a sound check or practice session, prior to the start of the OM 13 Music Festival.

Elena Kats-Chernin was born in Tashkent in Uzbekistan in 1957, and emigrated with her family to Australia in 1975. She has studied composition with Richard Toop and Helmut Lachenmann. Much of Kats-Chernin’s career has been spent writing for theater, opera, and dance although she has also composed for more traditional ensembles, as well as numerous piano works which she performs herself on a regular basis.
