Description
Born to a royal family, famous for its musicians and holy men, Hidayat Khan is the first Indian musician to compose expressly for Western orchestras. His music, written in Eastern modes, is passionate and very expressive. Khan is the son of the musician and Sufi mystic, Inayat Khan, who in 1910 was the first to introduce Indian classical music to Western audiences. Raised in Paris, Hidayat Khan studied with Nadia Boulanger, and has made the conscious decision to compose for Western instruments only, although like his father he has lectured extensively on Sufism as well. This interview with Khan, conducted by Charles Amirkhanian in May or June of 1974 also includes a reading of Inayat Khan’s Sufi message as read by Helena Stadlinger, a leader of the Sufi Center in Oakland California.Genres
