Margaret Leng Tan (far left) demonstrates her toy pianos to a group of composers, during their retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside Ca, prior to their participation in the 5th Other Minds Music Festival in March of 1999. Born in Singapore in 1945, Tan early success as a pianist led to a scholarship to attend Juilliard, where she soon became the first women to receive a Doctorate degree from that preeminent institution. Her early interest in the prepared piano and the work of John Cage eventually led her to the toy piano, her performances on which has forced many a music critic to reevaluate the importance of such an unconventional instrument in contemporary music. At OM 5 she performed a number of works for toy piano by such noted composers and António Pinho Vargas, Errollyn Wallen, and John Cage, among others. the composers watching Tan are (l to r): Luc Ferrari, Mary Ellen Childs, Alvin Lucier, and Errollyn Wallen.Genres & Subjects
