Amelia Cuni stands of the stage of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, during the 10th Other Minds Music Festival, in March of 2004. Cuni is framed by an elaborate stage and lighting design. The raga-based “Ashtayama” was an audio-visual mediation that was beautifully pure in its austerity and clarity of purpose. The work embodied an Eastern idea of time, and the power of musical language to elicit an emotional response. Cuni, one of the few Western women to have mastered the classical Indian Dhrupad style of singing, joined creative forces with electronic composer Werner Durand and lighting and stage designer Uli Sigg for this multimedia phenomenon.Genres & Subjects
