Description
Violinists Kate Stenberg and Rick Shinozaki, pianist Michael Harrison, and cellist Hannah Addario-Berry (l to r), perform during OM 14, at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco. The Del Sol String Quartet, which also includes violist Charlton Lee, joined with composer and pianist Michael Harrison, to present the world premiere of Harrison’s “Tone Clouds” at the third and final concert of the 14th Other Minds Festival on March 7, 2009. However it is uncertain as to whether this image was taken during the actual performance, or during a final rehearsal of the piece. “Tone Clouds” is based on Harrison’s earlier composition for solo just intonation piano, “Revelations,” and shares the previous work’s alternate tuning. Harrison is a well known pianist with a long standing interest in different tuning systems who has designed his own “harmonic piano,” on which he can easily alternate between two different tunings using the same conventional keyboard. The Del Sol String Quartet have made a very successful career of performing difficult to interpret works by contemporary composers, and have been a mainstay at Other Minds concerts for several years.
