Bill Russell in New Orleans (1982)
Description
Bill Russell at home in New Orleans, in December of 1982. Born in 1905, Russell was a musicologist and composer with a particular interest in modern percussion composition and New Orleans jazz. In work that predated that of John Cage, with whom he was friends, Russell explored the possibilities of unusual percussion instrumentation, often incorporating bottles, Haitian drums, prepared pianos, and normal household objects in his distinctly modern compositions. Russell was also an expert on the early history of New Orleans jazz, and author of numerous articles and books on Jelly Roll Morton and other early jazz musicians. Russell died in his adopted city of New Orleans in 1992.
