Description
Percussionist Warren Smith playing the drums during a rehearsal for Other Minds 15, held at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco.

Although percussionist and composer Warren Smith (b. 1934) is classically trained, he is best known for his improvised jazz music. Beginning as a vibraphonist on early Miles Davis recordings, Smith has had a long and illustrious career performing with some of the biggest names in jazz, as well as fronting his own ensembles. In the 1970s and 80s his Studio Wis was a leading center for the free jazz movement that included such master improvisers as Oliver Lake, Anthony Braxton, and Wadada Leo Smith.
