Description
Elena Kats-Chernin & Dan Becker (l to r), taken during the composers’ retreat at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, prior to the start of the 13th Other Minds Festival, taken on March 5, 2008.

Elena Kats-Chernin was born in Tashkent in Uzbekistan in 1957, and emigrated with her family to Australia in 1975. She has studied composition with Richard Toop and Helmut Lachenmann. Much of Kats-Chernin’s career has been spent writing for theater, opera, and dance although she has also composed for more traditional ensembles, as well as numerous piano works which she performs herself on a regular basis.

Dan Becker, born in 1960, is a San Francisco composer who has been influenced by the early minimalists such as Terry Riley, with whom he studied. A graduate of Yale University, Becker’s music has been performed at festival’s all over the United States, and he has held faculty positions at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is the founder of Common Sense Composers’ Collective.
