Description
A black and white portrait of a large group, including various artists in modern music and art of the time (ca. late 1940s). Top left to right: Babette Edelstein (wife of Monroe Edelstein, who took this photograph), Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Alan Hovhaness, Dr. Leon Ajemian (father to Maro and Anahid), pianist William Masselos, and two other unidentified men. In the middle row below Hovhaness are Anne Parker Wigglesworth (artist, wife of Frank), Frank Wigglesworth, Maro Ajemian, Carol Marcus Saroyan (actress, married to William Saroyan, also known as Carol Grace and later Carol Matthau), and two unidentified women, one of which may be the Ajemians' housekeeper. In the bottom row (kneeling and sitting): Yenouk Der Hagopian (artist), Siroun Erganian Ajemian (mother of Maro and Anahid), and Anahid Ajemian. The next three women sitting on the floor are Serafina Hovhaness (third wife of Alan Hovhaness), Dr. Elizabeth Gregory (Pediatrician, first woman admitted to Harvard Medical School, early champion of the music of Alan Hovhaness), Mary Avakian (sister of George Avakian), and Mary's husband. Above him are George Avakian (married to Anahid Ajemian), and to his left, writer William Saroyan.

Taken at the home of the Ajemian's parents on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City.
