Description
In this program, recorded in 1987, Fred Frith joins Charles Amirkhanian in a discussion about Hans Reichel, a maker of guitars, musician, improviser, and musical collaborator. Frith who has known Reichel for more than fifteen years and was scheduled to perform with him later that week describes Reichel’s work as a master craftsman building uniquely sounding instruments. As a performer, Reichel uses a Japanese technique, plucking the strings with one hand and stopping them with the other. Reichel is from Wueppertal, near Dusseldorf, where many German free music (without a score) improvisers originated. Frith, who likes free music but who often composes more structured pieces, offers his opinions on the noise/free music/improv scene. The segment ends with a selection from Frith's "Technology of Tears", a piece written for dance.
