Description
A collection of primarily 20th century folk and protest songs featuring performances by Pete Seeger, Paul Robeson, The Almanac Singers, Cris Williamson, and others. The songs heard here vary from classic union songs, protest songs, and anti-war songs, including Jewish folk songs about the Holocaust and several songs inspired by the Spanish Civil War. Also included are songs made popular during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s, and others coming out of the Woman’s Movement of the 1970s. Many of the performances were recorded live, including several by the seminal folk band The Weavers and what is most likely Ronnie Gilbert with Holly Near. While many collections of popular American folk songs focus on a particular topic the range of variety in this collection is quite broad and thus serves as an excellent primer for any listener interested in learning more about the scope of the American folk music revival in the later half of the 20th century.
