A performance, most likely by the San Francisco Conservatory New Music Ensemble, of Robert Moran’s “Elegant Journey with Stopping Points of Interest.” An aleatoric piece scored for percussion ensemble, or, as is heard here, a chamber orchestra, “Elegant Journey” was composed in the mid-1960s, and featured one of Moran’s first experiments with a fully graphic score. As such it provided a challenge for the performers and listeners, who may have been unaccustomed to dealing with the complexities of trying to interpret the intentions and interactions of both composer and musicians. A challenge that was successfully overcome, as the applause at the conclusion of this concert recording makes clear.Genres
