Description
The first concert of the 1966 Cabrillo Music Festival began with Luigi Boccherini’s “Symphony in F, Opus 35, No. 4”, as performed by the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra under the direction of Gerhard Samuel. Scored for two oboes, bassoon, two horns, and strings the work is written in the Rococo style that predates the more romantic and heroic music of Beethoven. It is therefore somewhat appropriate that the next piece of music heard is that of Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 1” as performed by Roy Bogas. Bogas, who gave his first recital at the age of 7, debuted with the San Francisco Symphony at the age of 14, and received a high award at the second annual Tchaikovsky Competition, is briefly interviewed by host Charles Shere during the concert’s intermission. The concert then concludes with Robert Schumann’s “Symphony No. 2”.
