Recorded on September 5, 1991 as part of the San Francisco Exploratorium’s Speaking of Music series, the acclaimed British born ghazal singer of South Asian ancestry, Najma Akhtar, and her band, are heard in concert as well as in conversation with Charles Amirkhanian. Trained as a chemical engineer but fortunately doing very well as a singer, Najma has successfully blended the traditional singing styles of her ancestors with the modern rhythms of pop music, and is recognized around the globe as one of the premiere practitioners of what has become to be known as world fusion music. In this program she and her band perform a number of songs from her numerous CDs as well as provide some background information on their origin and meaning.Genres
