Description
Prior to the start of the first concert of OM 11, held on February 25, 2006, Charles Amirkhanian moderated this panel discussion with the featured composers and some of the performers of that night’s musical offerings. Maria De Alvear, who studied music theater with Mauricio Kagel, and is perhaps best known for her intricately fashioned evening long works, describes her “Gran Sol” which she was to perform with fellow singer Amelia Cuni and cellist Joan Jeanrenaud. Fred Frith and his former student and current musical partner Sudhu Tewari, then discuss how broken household appliances can be easily turned into musical instruments, as well as touching a upon some of the difference between performing improvised versus composed music. And Amirkhanian, whose sound collage tape piece “Son of Metropolis San Francisco” was also to be heard that evening, traces his interest in composition from developing drum cadences for marching band, to the percussion music of John Cage and Lou Harrison, to his current interest in text-sound compositions.
