Description
On January 13, 1983, in San Francisco, Laurie Steele conducted the Mostly Modern Chamber Players in a concert honoring Henry Cowell’s New Music Society, the concert-giving organization founded in California by the late composer. The composers represented in this program, as well as some of those in the audience, all owed a debt of gratitude to Cowell’s concert series and his “New Music Quarterly” which published many of their works for the first time. Nicolas Slonimsky, whose suite for woodwinds, percussion, typewriter, and cat’s meow is included in the program, and who had a personal connection with almost every other composition heard in this concert, provides a brief introduction.
