Description
Sun Singer was written for the 1952 Festival of Contemporary Arts of the University of Illinois. The title and character of the music were suggested by the statue of that name by Carl Milles, located at the University’s Robert Allerton Park, Monticello, Illinois. The first performances were given by the Univ. Symphony Orch in March 1952 at the University and in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, under the direction of Rafael Kubelik. the piece is divided into four rather clearly marked sections: an opening allegro, a quiet section, a scherzo-like section, and a brief return of the opening allegro. Performed by the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Goodman. This recording was dubbed from the University of Illinois Custom Recording Series CRS 2 ( a 10” mono LP).

Gordon Binkerd was born in Lynch, Nebraska, in 1916, and grew up in Nebraska and South Dakota. His teachers in composition have been Bernard Rogers and Walter Piston. He taught at the University of Illinois from 1949-1971.
